Bike Safety

It was great to see the whole class with bikes for bike safety. Here's a movie and a few photos to share what we did.

We practised looking over our right shoulder for hazards, riding in and out of cones, balancing on our bikes without moving and turning sharp corners.

Room 3's forest

Here's a picture of Room 3's forest. After the trips were posponed 4 times we finally had to cancel the trip. Room 3 made a forest in the art corner of our class. Our main purpose was to learn about the different layers of the forest.

We had Room 4 in our class to teach them about the forest. We made this video to teach them how to leave the forest in the way that they found it.

Worm Farm

Room 3 have been partically interested about worm farms after a reading group read about earth worms and what they eat. We also read an article about a boy who made a worm farm out of a 3L juice bottle.

We looked at Room 4's worm farm to look at the different layers that worm farms have.

Mrs Allison went to Central Worm Works and got some Tiger worms off Robbie
To make our worm farms:

First we filled half the bottle with potting mix.

Next George put about 10 worms on top of the potting mix.

Then we put more potting mix over the worms.
Robbie from Worm Works told Mrs Allison to feed the worms in one corner of the container so the worms can come up and get the food.
We made covers out of newspaper to keep the worms in the dark.

Here's a list of the things we can and can't feed our worms.

Bush Creek

Hopefully you all managed to see the production. We have had a busy term working towards our performance. We have learnt the following things during this process.
- Accepting others view points by listening and valuing their ideas to work together in creating a dance.
- The importance of practicing something to perfect it.
- Working as a team on and off stage.
- Respecting others by keeping quiet off stage.
- Performing a role on stage.

Martin Curtis came to our classroom and shared the process he took to write the song 'Kakapo'.

Finn P.K. recorded Martin Curtis' visit
He wrote:
Martin Curtis came to school and played two songs. The first was 'Kakapo', the second was 'Gin and Raspberry.'

The children have wrote down their memories from the production.
Taane wrote:
As we sit down with no talking the band played a signal. Then all the kids stood up. As we stood up we couldn't talk. We walked on the stage with no talking. We went on our tippy toes with our hands out in front of us. We got into a 'V'. Then we did a dance. After our dance all the parents clapped as we walked off stage. Then it is the next classes turn.

Aimee wrote:
The noses smelt like paint, but I got over it. The first time it took to long for all of us to put our costumes on. We had to be quick. So the boys have ears and the girls don't. They wore leotards, egg cartons for noses, with tails that belonged to Kindergarten and leggings. The boys wore Mackenzie and Monty's headbands with brown rat ears on them.

Using photos for different purposes

The Year 2's are learning how to use the computer programme 'Comic Life'. Here's a few examples of the Cross country and the trip to to see the Irish  Rugby Team.

Kakapo Artwork

As part of this term's inquiry 'I te Ngahere' (Down in the bush) Room 3 have been busy learning about the Kakapo and are intrigued by them sleeping all day and looking for their food at night. We have learnt that this means that the night parrot is nocturnal.

We have looked at the Artist Shane Hansen and getting inspiration of the koru patterns and swirls in his artworks to complete the background of our artwork.

Here's a few examples of the artwork Room 3 have completed. Come and see the rest of them in Room 3.

Cross country

Here are a few snapshots of the cross country. The children have been proud of the training that they have done over various afternoons at school and many have seen the benefits of practising.
Take your marks...

Goal setting

As part of setting goals the children need to work towards achieving them. In our class each child's individual goal (set at the goal setting interviews in Term 2) are displayed on the wall as reminders to the children. Each time the children work towards their goal their caterpillars will grow.

Watch as our caterpillars grow as we work towards our goals.

What is the weather like today?

Ms Tamati taught us last week how to ask what the weather is like.

He aha te auha o te ra?
What is the weather like today?

Using our skills in Paint we made posters to help us answer this question.

Fractions

As part of Numeracy at the moment we have been learning about fractions.

Last Friday when our class had muffins the children shared 1 muffin between 4 children, another muffin with 1 other person and 1 muffin to eat by themselves.

We have learnt that fractions are equal so we all get the same amount. With food the children were very quick learners.

We wanted to know what shaped kite works best

When Finn tried to fly his kite it didn’t work. When Mrs Allison held the kite it flew. This is because Mr Allison is taller than Finn. Finn’s kite flew when the wind was behind Mrs Allison. Finn’s kite worked.

Aimee and Claire’s kite flew a little bit but it broke because the kite needed to be more supported. This means that it needed to be a curved shape not scrunched together so the wind doesn’t blow it too far. This kite did not work.

It flew really well. The air went in the bag and the wind blew its tail so it looked like a tiny fish swimming in the air. Their kite worked.

Jamie and Emma's kite flew very well. The shorter the string the more tricks it did and the longer the string it went down to the ground. Their kite worked.

How is wind formed?

How does the wind blow? Where does the wind blow to? How do para gliders go up?

These are some of our classes questions about wind. We have had experts come into our class, seen videos on you tube, read books and looked on Internet on weather sites to help us find the answers to our questions.

Where does the wind blow?
Taane, Finn T, Jamie and George tell us how.

How does a para glider go up in the sky?
Kiara, Aimee, Claire and Kaia tell us how.

Experts come to visit

A huge thanks to Ange Bayc and Ryan Larraman who talked to us about their sports kite surfing and paragliding. Both sports are very different, however they have some similar things.

This venn diagram tells us about both sports. The green part is the things that are the same with both kite surfing and paragliding.

Ange brought her kite along to show us what equipment is used for kite surfing. Kite surfers can't go towards the wind otherwise it will push them back. Kite surfers travel in zig zag patterns to get out into the water.
Jamie is wearing the safety harness that is attached to the kite when kite surfing.

Paragligers jump off hills and mountains. When Ryan sees a bird moving up he travels to it because they are usually in a thermal. This means the hot air is rising up and this will help Ryan to travel up.

We love to read!

Thank you to all of you who have lent us your Dr. Seuss books for our classroom display. Room 3 are enjoying listening and reading his books. We are finding them tricky to read quickly because they have heaps of rhyming words.

Batholomew and the oobleck

'Batholomew and the Oobleck' By Dr. Seuss
King Derwin of Didd decided he was bored of having rain, snow and sunshine coming from the sky. He asked his magicians to create something new to fall from the sky. His wish came true and the town of Didd was covered in oobleck.

After reading the book, Room 3 were interested to feel and see what oobleck is.
While we were making a mess, Mrs Allison wrote down all the things that we said.
