How is wind formed?

How does the wind blow? Where does the wind blow to? How do para gliders go up?

These are some of our classes questions about wind. We have had experts come into our class, seen videos on you tube, read books and looked on Internet on weather sites to help us find the answers to our questions.

Experts come to visit

A huge thanks to Ange Bayc and Ryan Larraman who talked to us about their sports kite surfing and paragliding. Both sports are very different, however they have some similar things.

 This venn diagram tells us about both sports. The green part is the things that are the same with both kite surfing and paragliding.

Ange brought her kite along to show us what equipment is used for kite surfing. Kite surfers can't go towards the wind otherwise it will push them back. Kite surfers travel in zig zag patterns to get out into the water.

Jamie is wearing the safety harness that is attached to the kite when kite surfing.

Paragligers jump off hills and mountains. When Ryan sees a bird moving up he travels to it because they are usually in a thermal. This means the hot air is rising up and this will help Ryan to travel up.

Thank you to all of you who have lent us your Dr. Seuss books for our classroom display. Room 3 are enjoying listening and reading his books. We are finding them tricky to read quickly because they have heaps of rhyming words.

Batholomew and the oobleck

'Batholomew and the Oobleck' By Dr. Seuss

King Derwin of Didd decided he was bored of having rain, snow and sunshine coming from the sky. He asked his magicians to create something new to fall from the sky. His wish came true and the town of Didd was covered in oobleck.

 

After reading the book, Room 3 were interested to feel and see what oobleck is.

While we were making a mess, Mrs Allison wrote down all the things that we said.

How is wind formed?

How is wind made? This is the question that many of the students wanted to know. We role played, drew pictures and diagrams on paper and in the computer programme paint. We read books to find information and watched a few videos on you tube.

The wind

Wind is air that travels. The hot air rises. The cold air rushes in to take it’s place. Air has a little bit of weight in it. This is why we feel it on our face.
